While James was out somewhere in the world on Order business, Lily was stuck at the cottage in Godric’s Hollow. Not because she didn’t want to be out at that somewhere with James but because she had recently discovered she was pregnant with their first child, and James refused to let her go with them. So day in and day out, she cleaned the house and every few days wandered into town to get some food to satisfy her cravings. And with each day, as her belly grew larger, she anticipated James’s return more and more. Sure, she wanted You-Know-Who to be defeated and a safer world in which to raise a child, but there were other Order members to make sure that happened; Lily wanted James home for her battle with pregnancy even more.

Hermione stood on the far side of the Room of Requirement. The room was exactly how it had been left last school year. Yet she wasn’t practicing defense. She was looking at the collage of motivational newspaper clippings, photos, and the member list. Well, no. She was staring at only one thing: A picture of Cedric Diggory. She let out a heavy sigh.

“I won’t tell, if you don’t.” 

Startled, Hermione jumped before turning around and holding out her wand, which she began lowering out of confusion. She blinked a few times, bringing herself back to this distorted reality.  ”What do you want Malfoy?”

“I won’t tell, if you don’t,” he repeated.

“Tell what?”

“About you and Diggory.” He raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t think you were the adulterer type, but—”

“I’m not.” Her grip on her wand tightened. “Cedric and I—”

“Spare me the details, Granger.”

Her eyes narrowed. “What is it that you don’t want me to tell?”

“Why I’m in this room.” He paused for a moment, expecting her to say something, but when she didn’t, he continued, “See, I’ve been given a great task to do this year. I need this room for it.”

“You need to train?”

“No,” he said, gritting his teeth. “I need this room but a different room.” At her recognition, he exhaled deeply. “There’s a cabinet in that room that I need to fix, and you being—”

“Fix?”

“Yes, fix.”

“Why?”

“Because—” He shook his head and pulled up his left sleeve. While he certainly did not like Granger, he just knew that he could trust her with this. That being despite her eyes widening in terror as she saw the tattoo on his arm. It wasn’t fear of him, but it was fear of why he had the permanent mark in the first place. She had caught on quickly, and he knew he had rightfully extended his trust to her.

This was it. Her big day.

She’d be escorted down the aisle by her father and given away to the one man she loved the most. The one man she loved more the her best friend, her career, everything.

And that man wasn’t me.

That man was the man who swept her off the feet long before I came into the picture. Who had put her through so much in such a short amount of time. Who she went to Hell and back for so that he wouldn’t be the one thing he had sworn to kill. Who broke her heart. Who stole her away from me.

I was so anxious that I couldn’t sit still. I had to do something, and pacing in the entrance hall of the chapel was the only acceptable thing to do.

Every now and then I would nod at arriving guests or exchange looks with Vasilisa, the queen, clad in a baby pink maid of honor dress. I knew she had been worried about my attendance at the wedding, but I promised her, as well as everyone else, that I would be on my best behavior. 

“Janine, you’re going to crush her ribs if you pull any tighter,” a man said from a room with its door slightly ajar.

“Hush, Ibrahim,” a woman with a Scottish accent snapped.

“It’s a corset—” a third, American accented voice “—so of course it’s going to be painful, old man. That’s why chose this dress. Beauty doesn’t come without a little pain. I have to be the best looking person in the room—” As if that weren’t already true, I thought bitterly. “—other than Dimitri of course.”

“Stop talking!” Janine said. “You’re distracting me.”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to see her. 

So I made my way to the bride’s dressing room and lightly knocked on the door. Three pairs of eyes were suddenly set on me. 

“I was just wondering if I could speak to Rose for a moment,” I said smoothly. Abe and Guardian Hathaway exchanged looks and then reluctantly passed me on their way out of the room. 

“Adrian,” Rose said with a curt nod. She turned to examine herself in the full-length mirror. 

I sighed. “Listen, Rose—”

“Why?” She glared at my reflection in the mirror. “To ruin what’s supposed to be the happiest day of my life? Couldn’t you wait at least a week into my marriage to start making me feel lower than the ground you drunkenly stumble on?”

Ouch. “Of course not.”

“Then what?” 

“I just wanted a peek at the bride before she walked down the aisle.” I grinned, exposing my fangs. “I like what I see, little dhampir. You’re going to leave Belikov speechless.”

And before she could reply, I turned on my heel and left the room. I nearly ran into Belikov on the way to out. We stared each other down. But then I politely nodded and took my seat near Eddie Castile toward the front of the chapel. 

I would sit through the most agonizing moments of my life in just a matter of moments. Rose would take Dimitri’s last name, and there would be no turning back. She would get her happily ever after.

As they exchanged rings, I looked over to Dimitri’s side of the church. One girl stood out to me, and I couldn’t help but stare. She must have sensed it because she looked at me and smiled. I smiled and winked in return. 

Maybe I’d get my happily ever after, too.

Maybe with this girl… who looked oddly familiar. 

And I’d have Rose and Dimitri to thank. Thank for inviting this stunning woman to the wedding, therefore part of my life.

The bed shifted, and I felt myself slowly wake. When I reached to the other side of the bed, all I grabbed was the sheet. I sprawled out a little and watched the man hunt the room for his clothing. My eyes were barely open.

“I didn’t take you as the sleep and dash type,” I said quietly. 

He turned to face me and continued buttoning his shirt. “I hope you didn’t take me as the type who picks up women at bars.”

“Not really, but maybe I should have.” I smiled and shifted to become more comfortable. 

“I’ll go fix breakfast,” he mumbled as he started making his way out of the room.

“Oh, hey, Belikov!” I called, now propped up on my elbows. “Does this mean I get a raise?”

“Oh,” he said slowly, yet mischievously, “I think you’ve had enough of a raise for now, Roza.” And then he left.

I wasn’t sure whether to take that as a good or bad thing.

Alternative Ending to Shadow Kiss:

“Belikov’s gone. His body’s gone!” a guardian shouted toward the mouth of the cave.

I looked up, my heart shattering. The guardian was right. Dimitri’s body was nowhere to be found. That meant the blonde Strigoi took him somewhere. Either as a hostage or possibly ally. Which one I wasn’t sure, but neither was good. Dimitri, my Dimitri, wouldn’t want either: Life as a Strigoi or in servitude to one.

I wanted to save him. I needed to save him.

And so I ran. Ran to save the man I loved.
